Have you bought a new cat scratcher and your cat still does not want to use it? Any attempts to encourage your pet to use a scratcher have failed? In this article we will tell you how to teach your cat to use the scratcher and what tricks to use. You will find out what to do!

When your cat is still scratching the couch...

... spray the upholstery with a special pet deterrent. You can either buy it in the pet store or prepare it yourself. Use citrus or cloves - kittens do not like their smell! If your pet keeps scratching wooden furniture, the best way to teach him not to scratch is to polish it with scented paste.

Adjust the scratcher to your kitten

Buying an unsuitable scratcher for the cat is one of the biggest mistakes made by inexperienced owners. Firstly, a good scratcher has to be solid and totally safe so the kitten can use it all the time.  It cannot move! Otherwise, the cat will be reluctant to use it. In that case we risk wasting time and money. Adjust the scratcher to the cat’s needs and expectations, as well as to the housing conditions. The scratcher should be placed in a room where your cat is willing to stay. The Polish market is very developed at the moment. We have access to a variety of pet accessories. You can choose a solution for active kittens - a multi-level scratcher with a hammock, or something for lazybones - a soft bed with a single scratching post.

Motivation

We know how difficult it is to encourage a cat to use a new scratcher. What about a bit of motivation? Combine fun with pleasure and what your kitten likes the most. If you notice your pet has decided to use a scratcher, give him a treat.

Boredom? Not a problem

Some kittens have such large deposits of energy they start scratching from boredom. Take care of your pet’s entertainment to avoid it. Play together as often as you can. Your cat will discharge the accumulated energy. You will not get any more damages.

Catnip

Cats go crazy about catnip. This plant stimulates their senses and makes them feel excited. Unfortunately not all kittens like it! Nevertheless, it is worth it to use it to practice with your cat and teach him new habits. Spray catnip on a scratcher and encourage your cat to use it.

Changing habits step by step

Encouraging a pet to use a scratcher can be a challenge for some of you. Cats are wise creatures. Practice new tricks with your pet and effectively encourage him to change his habits. If your cat does not react to catnip at all, try another method. You will soon notice the first effects!
